Now that mass will be available from 4th July, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. However, Cardinal Nichols has written a letter explaining that with the easing of restrictions on worship with congregations, we still need to proceed with caution. Presently the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended. A significant number of churches will remain closed if they cannot meet the requirements for opening for individual prayer. As we suspected, numbers will be limited for attending Mass and this will be determined at a local level. Cardinal Nichols is suggesting that we consider attending Mass during the week to ease the pressure on Sunday celebrations. Masses will also be shorter than usual and there will be no singing. As there are a significant number of people shielding and unable to attend Mass, the cardinal has asked that Masses may continue to be live streamed.
